It’s November, the month when I turn into a MLM Mom and start shilling for the nonprofit news organization I co-founded with the best journalists I know: The Objective.
Why November? Well, there’s a fundraising drive called NewsMatch that matches donations to select impact-oriented nonprofit news organizations, run by the Institute of Nonprofit News. Such organizations include Flatwater Free Press, which sued the state of Nebraska over FOIA violations (very punk rock), or The Kansas City Defender, which broke the story from a couple years ago about the rapist cop that was put on leave with pay (McClatchy, whomst?).
Why The Objective? Because we can’t depend on donations from the regular journalism funders like the Knight Foundation or Scripps-Howard. In fact, we make a point to criticize these mega-donors and their ties to white supremacists. If you’re looking for an organization that explicitly supports journalists in Gaza or calls-out bullshit from legacy media, maybe give us a read?
And if that’s not really your speed, please consider giving money to the dozens of other very small but extremely powerful newsrooms also participating in NewsMatch.
Alright, that’s my spiel. Here’s some jobs:

What got me through last week
The anti-optimalization corner.
Over the summer I read a book that was 1000+ pages called Let the Record Show. If you’re feeling paralyzed with despair, I highly recommend this book. You don’t even need to read all 1000+ pages. If a bunch of LGBT+ people (half of whom were dying or have since died) in New York can organize enough to fundamentally change how the American health system addressed AIDS under Regan, surely we can organize enough to protect those in our communities, too.
